Cool S Colonnade (2022)

With the Cool S colonnade, I aimed to give form to the backdrop of 21st Century Britain, with its crumbling neoclassical hubris and ubiquitous graffiti tagging. Where classical Britain erected neoclassicism as an assertion of permanence - 21st century Britain treats it as something to be climbed, scaled tagged.
The calisthenics athletes and the free runners that scale these public monuments are the contemporary, animated parallels to the writhing athletes in classical-bas-relief (see below). The bas-relief athlete twists against stone, but the contemporary athlete twists with it.
The ionic volute, once a symbol of imperial poise and neoclassical self-seriousness, is absorbed into street vernacular and reborn as the Cool S.
Thus, the Cool S is both ornament and trajectory, tag and torque, a glyph where classical ideal meets urban stress-testing.
